The Sanctuary Awards, established in 1991, celebrate outstanding conservation and sustainability initiatives within the MOD estate, recognizing both military and civilian efforts across various aspects of Defense operations. These awards highlight endeavours ranging from sustainable development and environmental preservation to resource-saving measures and community engagement, spanning MOD properties in the UK and abroad.

At the recent ceremony held at HMNB Portsmouth on March 19th, the Joint Bands School Project received the Sustainable Procurement and Construction Award. A collaborative effort between the Army and Navy under the DEO Portfolio, this project focused on the extensive restoration of a former military prison block, Gibraltar Block, dating back to 1834.

The Sustainable Procurement and Construction Award honours initiatives that promote sustainability in equipment/services, supply chain management, and innovative construction or refurbishment projects. Sherin Aminossehe, MOD’s Director of Infrastructure, praised the project for exemplifying Defense Estate Optimisation through sustainable practices and innovative construction methods while preserving historical significance.

The refurbishment of Gibraltar Block transformed former prison cells into shared practice spaces for musicians from the Royal Marines and Royal Corps of Army Music. The project aimed to blend modern functionality with historical preservation, retaining original features such as graffiti and contraband while introducing modern amenities. Adherence to heritage guidelines set by Historic England and local authorities ensured the project’s success, setting a benchmark for future conservation efforts within the MOD estate.
