The Westin Dublin Unveils Expansion
The Westin Dublin, a luxury five star hotel in the heart of Dublin city centre, has unveiled an elegant multi-million euro redesign and expansion, utilizing space that was once part of the prominent AIB sandstone building, located on the corner of Westmoreland Street and College Street. Led by Dublin-based architecture and interior-design firm, NODA, the project includes a stunning restyle and expansion of the hotel’s iconic Atrium Lounge. It also includes the creation of an additional space, the Library, and the addition of 19 beautifully appointed bedrooms overlooking Trinity College and Westmoreland Street in the Westin’s new Heritage Wing.
An inspirational haven, with a five-story high glass ceiling, the existing Atrium Lounge at The Westin Dublin sits in the heart of the hotel. It is known to many as an oasis of calm in the bustling city centre and a focal point for morning coffee and celebratory afternoon teas. The new space, the Library, sits adjacent to the Atrium Lounge and offers a more intimate and private setting, the perfect addition to the bright and spacious Atrium. The design of this extension combines natural, clean lines with rich textures, while also introducing beautiful, hand painted wallcoverings, with floral motifs and bespoke furniture. Antique mirrors, pendant lamps and innovative lighting make the Library the ideal setting to sit back, relax, and escape from busy city life. The inspiration behind the Library stems from the Westin’s neighbouring libraries at Trinity College Dublin and is demonstrated in the deep burgundy tones, Irish mahogany bookshelves and focal marble fireplace.
In contrast to the city centre ambience in the public areas of the Westin Dublin, the mise en scéne for the new heritage deluxe bedrooms emanates from the dramatic Irish coastline. Many patrons of the Westin Dublin travel from overseas to the hotel, and first encounter Ireland with aerial coastal views of the Emerald Isle. Think of Allcock and Browne making the first transatlantic crossing 100 years ago in 1919, the aerial view that they captured remains the same to this day.
This view inspired Maree Hensee and Mark Ryan when they were asked by the Westin to create artwork for the bedrooms. Utilizing bronze and wood, each abstract piece sits above the bedhead and shows water and land in white on either side of a bronze shoreline. Eoghan Kavanagh’s photography focuses on one intimate detail of the Irish coastline, bringing another aspect of the dramatic coast to life in these heritage deluxe bedrooms. The bedroom design encapsulates the vision, shapes, and textures of cliff edges, sand, and water, using natural materials such as Donegal linen and custom made carpet produced to depict the gentle surf of the Irish waters.
The Westin Dublin’s renovation project showcases work by a range of Irish craftspeople and suppliers, including Tom Delaney, O’Donnell Furniture, and Cremins Moiselle. The bespoke design features foster calmness while also exuding a truly luxurious feel that complements the period features of the building.
