Eli Lilly’s Groundbreaking $1 Billion Investment Expands Life Sciences Presence in Limerick
Eli Lilly and Company, a renowned global life sciences company, initiated its presence in Ireland in 1978 with a small farm in Dunderrow, Kinsale. Approaching its fiftieth year in Ireland, the company has made a monumental investment in the country. In January 2023, Eli Lilly marked a historic moment by commencing the construction of a cutting-edge biotech manufacturing campus in Raheen, Co. Limerick, with a staggering $1 billion investment. This development, one of the most significant single investments in Limerick city and county, is currently providing employment to over 2,000 individuals during the construction phase, injecting vitality into the local economy.
The expansive campus, spanning nearly 47,400 sq m, will include a four-storey manufacturing building, a two-storey canteen, laboratory, administration building, and a two-storey warehouse with ancillary facilities. Limerick was strategically chosen for its excellent infrastructure, proximity to Shannon Airport, access to talent from nearby educational institutions, and a purpose-built site in Raheen. The decision was also influenced by its proximity to Eli Lilly’s existing operations in Kinsale and Little Island, Co. Cork.
Dave Riordan, General Manager, expressed the commitment of the Lilly Limerick team and highlighted the progress made, with the facility expected to be fully operational within the next three years. Despite this timeline, the company is actively engaging with the local community, emphasizing its dedication to establishing a strong foundation in Limerick. Riordan underscored the collaborative efforts with local traders and suppliers during the construction phase and stressed the ongoing commitment to hiring and recruitment, particularly in manufacturing operations, engineering, and scientific disciplines.
Community engagement has been a central focus for Eli Lilly, with events attracting hundreds of attendees eager to learn about the company’s work. The General Manager emphasized the company’s involvement in local groups, chambers, and charitable initiatives, highlighting a commitment to long-term partnerships. Eli Lilly has established connections with the University of Limerick and The Technological University of the Shannon, envisioning the Raheen facility as a testament to its enduring commitment to Limerick and anticipating positive contributions to the local community for decades to come.
