Ecocem and Biodiversity in Schools Launch Nationwide ‘Wildwalls’ Campaign
Ecocem, a pioneering force in low-carbon cement technologies in Europe, has joined forces with Biodiversity in Schools for the ‘Wildwalls’ campaign in Ireland, introducing a groundbreaking initiative with biodiversity prizes totalling €5,000. This campaign challenges students from pre, primary, secondary, and homeschools in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to design engaging murals for their schools. The goal is to raise awareness about biodiversity issues and integrate features that support local wildlife, addressing the urgent challenge of biodiversity loss, especially within the school environment.
Known for its high-performance cement technologies, such as the ACT breakthrough, Ecocem has developed innovative solutions that significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the cement and construction industries. This technology has the potential to cut the global carbon footprint of traditional cement manufacturing by over 50%.
Participating schools can submit their designs for the Wildwalls campaign through the ‘Biodiversity in Schools’ website by May 1, 2024. The €5,000 prize fund, distributed across various school categories, includes a professionally crafted wild mural, an indoor vertical garden, a low carbon plaque, a nature workshop, and resources, along with a €250 biodiversity project fund.
Chisom Ekomaru, Ecocem Group Sustainability Manager, emphasized the company’s commitment to biodiversity, acknowledging its crucial role in the local areas they and their customers operate. Ekomaru expressed pride in supporting the Wildwalls campaign, providing children with the opportunity to unleash their creativity and contemplate the plants and insects around them, creating natural havens on school walls to bring everyone closer to nature.
Mark Nolan, Director of Biodiversity in Schools, shared his excitement about the project, expressing a long-standing desire to initiate such an endeavour. Nolan highlighted the challenges schools face in supporting nature due to space constraints and praised the Wildwalls campaign for encouraging young minds to think creatively and reimagine spaces for biodiversity. He eagerly anticipates the innovative ideas that will emerge from students across Ireland.
