Augmented Reality and the future of construction – A CIF Event

The CIF is constantly looking for ways of bringing new information and innovations to our members. One area which looks like it will be of interest to the construction sector over the coming years is Augmented Reality (AR).

Augmented Reality is a new technology which allows for real world items and information to be enhanced by computer generated input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.  It is sometimes referred to as 4D technology. The potential implications and uses for this technology in the construction sector are massive.

Some of the possible benefits provided by Augmented Reality to the construction industry include:

Use Augmented Reality to build consensus during the prototype and design phase

Interactive augmented reality can help construction firms get clients, investors, and other key stakeholders on the same page through 3D visualization and knowledge-transfer. Simplify complex systems and paint a realistic picture that can be easily changed before ever breaking ground, thereby avoiding costly rework.

Augmented Reality gives workers the confidence to make the best decisions on the build site

With augmented reality, construction firms can provide intuitive work instructions to the on-the-ground workforce. Workers will understand processes quicker, spend less time on each step, and make fewer errors. Augmented work instructions shown step-by-step in context of the job being done increase efficiency, save money, and provide valuable process improvement analytics.
