In a recent statement, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) highlighted the crucial importance of a well-defined pipeline of projects to sustain investments necessary for delivering essential infrastructure. Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by Ireland’s current population of 5.2 million, the industry expressed confidence in its ability to meet the ambitious goals outlined in the National Development Plan (NDP).

Hubert Fitzpatrick, Director General of the Construction Industry Federation, underscored the significance of a transparent project pipeline. He stated, “A clear pipeline of projects will enable the industry to invest and procure the resources that are required to deliver on the infrastructure outlined in the National Development Plan. The Government’s commitment to investing in the NDP is critical for providing this certainty to support investment and growth in the sector.”

Fitzpatrick emphasized the need for a robust built environment, encompassing roads, transport systems, schools, hospitals, and utilities, to accommodate the growing population. He warned that failing to provide this essential infrastructure could lead to delays in achieving critical housing and climate commitment targets.

Addressing the workforce concerns, Fitzpatrick revealed that the industry remains optimistic about its ability to recruit sufficient workers for national construction projects. Despite the challenges faced, including the impact of the Covid pandemic, the construction sector saw substantial growth in its labor force. In 2019, 145,600 individuals were employed in the construction sector, a number that increased to 167,400 by Quarter 3 of 2023.

The CIF Director General also highlighted the strength of apprenticeship programs, with 6,500 new apprentices registered in 2023 and over 23,000 apprentices currently in training. Fitzpatrick welcomed the government’s investment in the National Careers in Construction Action Plan and applauded initiatives led by bodies such as the National Construction Training Centre, Solas, and the National Apprenticeship Office.

“While there is a need for labor, the volume needed is not insurmountable, and the industry is responding collaboratively. The importance of a clear pipeline of work to attract employees and give them confidence that they can build a future in construction is crucial,” Fitzpatrick concluded. The CIF remains optimistic about the industry’s capacity to meet the demands of the National Development Plan and contribute to Ireland’s sustainable growth.
