A consultation process on the adoption of BIM (Building Information Modelling) on Irish public works projects has begun. The Government Contracts Committee for Construction (GCCC) has prepared a position paper for the purposes of inviting responses from the Irish construction industry. The position paper, ‘A Public Sector BIM Adoption Strategy’, outlines the context and justification for the adoption of Building Information Modelling on public works projects and presents a proposed timeline for adoption.

BIM provides a means of structuring the information required to design, build and manage building and infrastructure assets.  It offers opportunities to deliver efficiencies and savings in the construction and operation of built assets that are owned or managed by the State on behalf of its citizens. According to the GCCC, it is incumbent on public bodies to consider how its implementation may be managed in a way that allows all those involved in the delivery of construction projects (both in the public and private sectors) to prepare for the adoption of the processes and the associated tools.

Responses are invited to the position paper from interested organisations and individuals. These responses should be submitted to publicworkscontractsreview@per.gov.ie by the close of business on 13 April 2017. Those submitted after the deadline will be accepted but the views expressed therein may not be considered in the final strategy.
