Proposals Underway for Significant Housing Developments in Northern Cork
Construction is on the horizon for three substantial housing projects set to unfold in various locations across North Cork in the year 2024. Developers have formally sought planning permission, marking a potential boost to the region’s housing inventory following applications submitted late last year.
In the final weeks of December 2023, independent planning proposals for residential developments in Macroom, Mitchelstown, and Glantane were officially lodged with Cork County Council. This initiative comes on the heels of the approved planning for a 44-house estate at Pulleen, located just beyond Kanturk, granted on December 18.
In Macroom’s Maghareen area, a request has been made for permission to construct a residential development featuring 62 houses. The proposed project, submitted by Massey Developments Limited on December 18, 2023, encompasses 34 semi-detached units, 24 terraced houses, and four detached dwellings, along with public open spaces. A new entrance from Mill Road and a connecting footpath to Masseytown Road via the Cornmills are integral parts of the plan. A decision on this application is anticipated by February 20, with public submissions due by January 30.
Meanwhile, in Brigown, Mitchelstown, the spotlight is on Sliabh Álainn, currently home to an existing housing estate, as it becomes the focus of a planning request for an additional 43-house development. The application from MDR Developments Limited, received by the council on December 19, envisions a layout comprising 26 three-bedroom semi-detached houses, five four-bedroom houses, four four-bedroom semi-detached houses, and four three-bedroom townhouses, in addition to four two-bedroom townhouses. The proposal includes provisions for public open spaces and an internal road network. Public submissions are accepted until January 31, and a decision is expected by February 21.
In Glantane’s Brittas area, Joe Hallissey Developments Ltd seeks approval to construct a development featuring ten houses, a neighborhood play area, and other residential facilities. The application, received by the council on December 19, outlines plans for six two-bedroom townhouses and four four-bedroom detached units, while also seeking permission to complete 21 houses initially permitted under a 2007 application. Councillors John Paul O’Shea and Tony O’Shea have voiced support for the application, with public submissions closing on January 31 and a decision expected by February 21.
These prospective developments signal a potential influx of housing options for North Cork residents and underscore the ongoing efforts to address the region’s housing needs.
