Hitachi Energy Bolsters Ireland-UK Power Link with Long-Term Service Agreement
Global technology leader Hitachi Energy has embarked on an eight-year service agreement, signalling a significant leap in enhancing the electricity grid connection between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Focused on optimizing the East-West Interconnector (EWIC), a pivotal high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link spanning 260 kilometres from Ireland to Wales, Hitachi Energy’s EnCompass portfolio will play a key role in ensuring operational efficiency. The commitment reaffirms the company’s decade-long involvement in designing, building, and providing ongoing service solutions for the 500-megawatt interconnector, reflecting its steadfast dedication to sustainable energy practices.
Niklas Persson, Managing Director at Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business, expressed pride in their selection to maximize the EWIC link’s performance. EnCompass, the innovative service solution, is positioned as a partnership ecosystem delivering cutting-edge digital services, with sustainability and customer value at its core. Rodney Doyle, Chief Operating Officer of EirGrid, acknowledged the critical role of Hitachi Energy in supporting the HVDC system, emphasizing its importance in securing a reliable power supply for customers on both sides of the Irish Sea.
The comprehensive service agreement encompasses 24/7 support, planned maintenance outages, health and safety management, cybersecurity measures, spare parts provisioning, installation, and training. Hitachi Energy’s commitment underscores the significance of existing infrastructure in the energy transition and aligns with the urgency required to achieve Net Zero.
