Irish Rail Raises Concerns Over Proposed Housing Development in Gort

Irish Rail has expressed concerns regarding a significant housing development planned for Gort, particularly due to its close proximity to the rail line.

The proposed project aims to construct 234 homes along Lavally Road, along with additional facilities such as a creche, cafe, office space, and recreational areas including an activity center.

While Irish Rail emphasizes that it is not inherently opposed to the development, it has raised issues regarding the site’s adjacency to the railway line. Specifically, Irish Rail has cited concerns regarding security and safety measures that it believes the project fails to adequately address.

The development plan includes structures of up to four storeys in height, with provisions for pedestrian and cyclist access to Gort Railway Station.

In response to these concerns, Irish Rail has submitted a request to Galway County Council, urging that if the development receives approval, 21 conditions be imposed specifically related to railway safety.

A decision on the matter is expected later this month.
