Irish Rail Unveils Game-Changing E-Ticket System
January 24
10:00 2024

In a groundbreaking move, Irish Rail is set to transform the landscape of intercity travel with the introduction of electronic tickets (e-tickets) across all services. This strategic shift eliminates the need for traditional ticket printing queues, ushering in an era of efficiency and convenience for rail passengers.

Irish Rail has been progressively rolling out e-tickets, utilizing QR codes, for specific ticket types such as low-fare and semi-flex options. Starting January 23, this digital ticketing system will be accessible to all passengers, marking a significant leap in embracing modern travel solutions.

One of the notable perks of e-tickets is their inherent flexibility. Passengers can now effortlessly modify or cancel specific legs of their journey, a feature previously unavailable with printed tickets. This enhancement aligns seamlessly with the Terms and Conditions of each fare type, empowering travelers with unprecedented control over their travel plans.

Identifiable by their distinct blue markings, gates equipped with QR code scanners facilitate a smooth entry process. In the absence of QR scanners at certain locations, passengers can present their e-tickets to on-site staff for swift access, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience.

Looking ahead, Irish Rail is gearing up to implement an ‘Add to Wallet’ feature, allowing customers to download their QR code tickets directly to their mobile wallet apps. Until then, passengers are advised to download the PDF version of their e-tickets, including the QR code, for easy access on their mobile devices or home-printed copies. The positive reception of this digital transformation, coupled with the TFI Go app, is expected to significantly enhance the accessibility and user-friendliness of public transport, according to Feljin Jose, a member of the Dublin Commuters Coalition and Local Area Representative in Cabra-Glasnevin for Dublin City Council. Irish Rail’s commitment to embracing these digital advancements paves the way for a more streamlined and efficient travel experience for rail passengers across Ireland.
