In a groundbreaking revelation, the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage reported a remarkable surge in residential construction in Laois throughout 2023. December witnessed an exceptional 52% increase in Commencement Notices, with 826 new homes initiated—a record-breaking figure, eclipsing the previous year’s 542. Contrary to assumptions, this surge is not merely a reflection of the Celtic Tiger era but signifies a contemporary boom in building activities.

Nationally, the trend is equally striking, with 32,801 Commencement Notices received between January and December 2023, marking a historic high and a 21.5% increase from 2022. Minister Darragh O’Brien attributes this success to government initiatives, including the development levy waiver and Irish Water rebate, along with support schemes for first-time buyers.

Minister O’Brien anticipates a more comprehensive picture when the full 2023 housing completion data is revealed in January. Expressing confidence in an upward trajectory, he foresees positive trends in key housing indicators, such as commencements, completions, and planning permissions. Notably, amidst a projected decline in construction activity across Europe in 2024, Ireland is poised for a 4.4% expansion, showcasing the resilience and growth of the construction sector in the country.
