OPW to advance construction of Cork City flood defences
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed that it is separating flood defence works in and around Morrison’s Island in Cork City from the overall €60m flood defence scheme, and will give responsibility over to Cork City Council.
The construction of flood defences for one of the most flood-prone zones in Cork City centre is being advanced amid criticism of delays on the Lower Lee flood relief scheme.
It could be 2022 before the scheme is finished. There could be four or five phases undertaken, with these phases overlapping, to reduce disruption to the City.
Cork City escaped significant damage from two flooding events last weekend, to the relief of traders.
Flood Risk Management is one of the OPW’s core business areas. The OPW is the lead State body for the coordination and implementation of Government policy on flood risk management. The OPW is also the national authority for the implementation of the EU Directive on the Assessment and Management of Flood Risks.
