Planning Permissions Granted for Apartments Increase by 304.5%

The number of apartment dwelling units granted planning permission in the third quarter of 2016 rose to 1,452, up from 359 in 2015, an incrase of 304.5%, the CSO revealed on Monday.

4,362 houses were also granted planning permission in the third quarter of 2016, up from 2,345 in 2015, and increase of 86%. Overall, the number of dwelling units planning permission was 5,816, an increase of 115% from the same time the previous year.

The third quarter figures also showed that one-off houses accounted for 19.4% of all new dwelling units granted planning permission in this quarter while the total number of planning permissions granted for all developments was 6,126. This compares with 5,009 in the third quarter of 2015, an increase of 22.3%.

Total floor area planned was 1,736 thousand square metres in the third quarter of 2016. Of this, 48.7% was for new dwellings, 36.2% for other new constructions and 15.1% for extensions.  The total floor area planned increased by 28.2% in comparison with the same quarter in 2015.

Planning Permissions for new buildings for Agriculture decreased to 494 this quarter. This compares to 301 permissions in the same quarter of 2015.
