Port Considers Construction of Multi-Storey Facility to Address Import Surge The Port of Cork Company is contemplating the development of a storage compound for new cars in response to a substantial 60 percent increase in imports. In January, the port is expected to receive 8,000 new vehicles, a significant rise from the 5,000 recorded last year. Consequently, the company is exploring the feasibility of constructing a multi-floor storage facility in Ringaskiddy.

In December 2023, the Port of Cork Company formalised its intent by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Vehicle Distribution and Euromed Ireland Logistics Ltd. The collaborative effort aims to assess the potential construction of a multi-story car storage facility with a capacity for up to 6,000 vehicles.

Facing a capacity crunch, a new car storage facility was allocated at Paddy’s Point in December 2023, marking a departure from the existing facility in Ringaskiddy.

This surge in demand aligns with the Society for the Irish Motor Industry’s announcement that new car registrations experienced a remarkable 16 percent increase in 2023 compared to the previous year. Electric vehicle registrations witnessed an even more substantial growth, soaring by 45 percent during the same period.
