Modular Construction Revolution by Portakabin: A Conversation with Gavin Fox
Gavin Fox: The key strengths of the Irish construction industry lie in a growing emphasis on sustainable and innovative construction practices, a strong regulatory framework and a commitment to quality and safety standards. Ireland is also a strategic location for international projects, attracting foreign direct investment from large global organisations seeking to build or expand their facilities here.
Question: What are the chief weaknesses of the Irish construction industry?
Gavin Fox: The main challenge the industry has been facing in recent times is a skilled labour shortage. This has been challenging capacity in the market and the meeting of supply with demand, which has been another driver for the adoption of modern methods of construction that require less skilled labour onsite.
Question: What do you regard as the main challenges facing the industry at present?
Gavin Fox: In addition to a skilled labour shortage, there are a number of other key challenges facing the construction industry as a whole. Global inflation has caused building material costs to rise, challenging the delivery of projects within budget. International events and conflicts have affected the supply chain, threatening to cause delays and project overruns. The adoption of technology is a positive challenge, seeing the rise of building information modelling (BIM) and the need to deliver smarter buildings. In addition, sustainability and the need to adopt construction methods that lesson environmental impact is now in shaper focus than ever before, which is a challenge we at Portakabin welcome.
Question: What are the solutions to these problems and what role will new technology play?
Gavin Fox: In facing these challenges, our industry will need to find new and better ways of working. Modern methods of construction will continue to drive transformative change. Digital disruption and the use of technology will play a pivotal role in this as the industry brings forth a new era of innovation and efficiency. Technologies like BIM, Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) are reshaping the way construction projects are conceptualised, executed, and managed. Embracing these digital advancements will allow construction companies to unlock their full potential, delivering remarkable projects while optimising resources and timelines.
Question: What do you see as the outlook for the Irish construction industry in 2024?
Gavin Fox: The outlook appears to be positive. The Irish construction industry looks set to perform strongly in 2024 with investment in projects across most sectors, in particular data centres, manufacturing, education, healthcare and residential. We are planning for a strong year of growth and looking forward to delivering many more modular buildings for our customers throughout this year.
