Tánaiste Micheál Martin Unveils Upgraded Dunkettle Interchange in Cork
The Dunkettle Interchange, situated just outside Cork City, has been officially inaugurated by Tánaiste Micheál Martin, marking the completion of an extensive €215 million project aimed at alleviating congestion and improving traffic flow in the area.
The ambitious scheme, located approximately 5km from Cork City, involved the construction of 18 new road links spanning 10km in length, along with the addition of seven new bridges. Moreover, surrounding roads received upgrades and resurfacing to enhance connectivity.
Situated at the convergence of four national routes, including the pivotal M8 Cork-Dublin motorway, the interchange serves as a vital hub for regional transportation.
Initial planning for the project commenced in 2013, with groundwork beginning in 2016, followed by full-scale construction in 2020. Despite rising traffic volumes, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) reports a significant 50% reduction in journey times during peak hours, underscoring the efficacy of the road enhancements.
Addressing attendees at the scheme’s unveiling ceremony, Tánaiste Micheál Martin hailed the project as a pivotal investment in Cork’s future, asserting its potential to catalyze economic and social development across the region and beyond.
TII Chief Executive Peter Walsh echoed Martin’s sentiments, emphasizing the project’s decade-long journey to fruition, made possible through innovative approaches and unwavering commitment from the project team, alongside the enduring support and patience of the public.
As the Dunkettle Interchange enters a three-year maintenance phase, ongoing environmental and traffic monitoring initiatives will ensure its sustained efficiency and effectiveness in facilitating smoother transportation in Cork and the wider Munster region.
