In Memoriam: The Legacy of Eddie O’Connor, Founder of Airtricity and Mainstream Renewable Power

Construction Business is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr Eddie O’Connor, a renowned entrepreneur and champion of renewable energy, at the age of 76. His visionary leadership in the development of the global wind industry has left an indelible mark on the renewable energy landscape.

Eddie O’Connor’s journey began as the Chief Executive of Bord na Móna in 1987, where he revolutionized the company’s strategic focus. In 1997, he founded Airtricity, a groundbreaking Irish wind farm development company that challenged the electricity monopoly and spearheaded the construction of Ireland’s first offshore wind farm in 2004. Under Eddie’s guidance, Airtricity grew into a global leader in renewable energy, playing a pivotal role in the wind energy revolution.

In 2008, he established Mainstream Renewable Power, dedicated to developing wind and solar projects worldwide. His commitment to innovation and clean energy solutions propelled Mainstream’s success, making it a leading global renewable energy company with projects spanning five continents.

Eddie’s foresight extended beyond business ventures. He recognized the need for new grid technology and advocated for a pan-European electricity super grid to bring renewable energy to consumers in a decarbonized European economy. His dedication to a sustainable future was unwavering, earning him a reputation as a trailblazer in the field.

In his later years, Eddie embarked on the SuperNode project, aiming to revolutionize electricity distribution using cutting-edge technology. He envisioned a future where renewable energy could be efficiently harnessed and distributed on a continent-wide scale.

Eddie O’Connor’s impact reached far beyond the boardroom. His tireless efforts and visionary leadership earned him respect and admiration from colleagues, friends, and industry peers. A man of great intelligence, courage, and resolve, Eddie’s legacy is etched in the renewable energy landscape, and his contributions will continue to shape the industry for generations to come.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, including his wife Hildegard, children Robert and Lesley, daughter-in-law Polly, son-in-law Stewart, and beloved grandchildren. Eddie O’Connor’s extraordinary life and commitment to a sustainable future will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
