Weev Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Network in Leitrim with Two New Rapid Charging Hubs
Weev, a leading electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure company, has bolstered its EV charging capabilities by introducing two state-of-the-art rapid charging hubs in Leitrim. The newly installed 150kW charger in Carrick-on-Shannon and the 120kW charger in Manorhamilton provide drivers with rapid charging options, contributing significantly to the accessibility of sustainable energy solutions for local residents and travelers in and around Leitrim.
The initiative is part of the FASTER Project, a collaborative effort between Louth County Council and East Border Region, aimed at promoting sustainable transport and facilitating the seamless transition to electric vehicles across the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Western Scotland.
Weev, having already established a robust public charging network in Northern Ireland, expressed enthusiasm for advancing EV infrastructure in Ireland. Philip Rainey, Chief Executive of Weev, highlighted the company’s commitment to enhancing electric vehicle infrastructure across the island, especially in underserved areas like the border counties. He emphasized the goal of supporting County Leitrim in gaining increased access to rapid EV charging and promoting widespread EV adoption.
Weev secured the contract through a competitive tender process, partnering with M&M Contractors to deliver 25 charge-points under the FASTER Project. The project received €6.4 million in EU funding under the INTERREG VA program and is backed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
Philip Rainey expressed excitement about being awarded the contract and emphasized Weev’s commitment to creating a top-notch EV infrastructure for the border region. He highlighted the installation of public EV chargers in County Leitrim as a significant milestone in the journey towards establishing a comprehensive all-island EV network.
Pamela Arthurs, Chief Executive of East Border Region, emphasized the positive impact of cross-border collaboration on sustainable transport infrastructure. With financial support from the EU INTERREG VA Programme, the FASTER Project successfully delivered 75 rapid EV chargers across Northern Ireland, the Border Counties of Ireland, and Western Scotland.
Cllr. Terry Andrews, Chairman of East Border Region, commended Weev and M&M Contractors for their efforts in delivering the charge-points across the Border Counties within a challenging timeframe. Weev plans to further expand its EV charging network by installing an additional 23 EV charge-points across counties Cavan, Louth, Monaghan, Meath, Sligo, and Donegal by the end of the year.
